Christmas is one of the only times of the year where ballet is given a prime time spot on a main TV channel. For ballet lovers who don’t have Sky Arts channel, this is a rare treat.
1) Cinderella: This year on Christmas Day at 3pm on BBC 2 Birmingham Royal Ballet treats us to a brand new version of Prokofiev’s classic Cinderella. The new ballet is directed and choreographed by David Bintley in collaboration with artist John Macfarlane and lighting designer David Finn. The ballet is part of the company’s 20th anniversary year and stars Elisha Willis as Cinderella and Iain McKay as The Prince.
So tune in on Christmas Day and if you are still tucking into Christmas Lunch and happen to miss it then panic not….it is repeated on Boxing Day on BBC 4 at 7pm.
2) Ballet Shoes: starring Harry Potter’s Emma Watson and Emilia Fox is on Watch (Sky 109) on 21 December 2010 at 4pm. This is a beautiful adaptation of Noel Streatfeild’s book. The film is set in London during the 1930s and it tells the story of orphans Pauline, Petrova and Posy Fossil. The story follows the grand plans of the three girls who are determined to succeed despite financial troubles.
